Applications are now opened for the DAAD Scholarship in International and Development Economics. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) grants a limited number of scholarships to cover living expenses (service fee is waived for recipients of such grants) for applicants from developing and newly industrialized countries. Applicants are selected by the DAAD in cooperation with HTW Berlin.

This DAAD Scholarship is only offered for Master’s Program in International and Development Economics – MIDE at HTW Berlin. DAAD promotes the training of developing countries’ human resources by supporting their citizens to study in Germany.

Established in 1994, the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (HTW Berlin – University of Applied Sciences for Engineering and Economics) is a public University of Applied Sciences located in Berlin, the capital of Germany. DAAD Scholarship in International and Development Economics Benefits

The program will provide successful applicants with the following benefits:

1. Living expenses (17 months): €934/month
2. Service Fee for the programme, amounting to 2,500 €, will be waived
3. Study and research subsidy
4. A subsidy for travel expenses (incl. insurance for accident & personal liability) to Germany and back home after the completion of the program
5. Health insurance
6. Preparatory German Language Course (February/ March).

DAAD Scholarship in International and Development Economics Eligibility

To qualify for this scholarship to study in Europe, Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• come from a developing or newly industrialized country (Please find more details above)
• have 2 or more years of professional experience since graduation (at the time of application)
• must not have graduated longer than 6 years ago
• fulfill the MIDE admission requirements.

How to Apply for the DAAD Scholarship in International and Development Economics

Interested applicants who would like to apply for this government scholarship need to follow the given instructions below.

1. complete the DAAD application form and the DAAD checklist and attach both documents to the MIDE application form. Don’t forget to date and personally sign the checklist and DAAD application form.
2. submit a statement of motivation (dated and personally signed) explaining why you are interested in attending a particular postgraduate course with reference to your current employment. Please further describe your development-related motivation and how you intend to make full use of your scholarship and education by taking on social responsibility later in your career.
3. submit proof of at least two years of professional work experience and state your current work situation at the time of application. It is required to submit the following proof: Certificate(s) of employment that include the exact position and period of employment. This/these letter(s) must come on official letterhead, be dated and signed as well as carry a stamp. Letters of appointment, work contracts, payslips etc. are not accepted as proof of employment.
4. a letter of reference from the employer(s), ideally guaranteeing re-employment after completion of the postgraduate course in Germany. This/these letter(s) must come on official letterhead, have a current date and be signed as well as carry a stamp.

Important: When applying for more than one postgraduate course (maximum 3 courses), you have to submit one motivation letter only, i.e. the same for each course, explaining why you are applying for these specific courses and why you chose that priority. You do not have to submit a separate statement of motivation for the MIDE program. Your statement of motivation for the DAAD scholarship will also serve as the required letter of motivation for the MIDE program.

If applying to more than one course, please list courses in order of priority in the DAAD application forms and do not change these priorities in the respective application!

1. a letter of motivation (max. two pages long), dated and personally signed by you
2. transcript of records (including CGPA) and degree certificate (s) (official translations into English or German must be provided)
3. an explanation of the grading system at your previous university (which is usually already part your transcript and/or the Diploma Supplement). Should this not be the case, please provide a short explanation prepared by you that contains information on the highest possible grade as well as the minimum passing grade.
4. Curriculum vitae (résumé) in the EuroPass format, dated and personally signed by you
5. Copy of your passport
6. Proof of your English language proficiency
7. A two-page summary of your undergraduate/postgraduate thesis (only if you have been required to write a thesis during your previous studies; please refrain from sending substitute documents if you have not been required to write a thesis so far).
