Applications are now opened for the DAAD Scholarship to Study Architecture in Germany. Foreign applicants who have gained a first university degree in the areas of Architecture, Interior Design, Monument Conservation, Urban Planning/Urban Development, Landscape Architecture, Landscape Planning at the latest by the time they commence their scholarship-supported study program. The program usually starts on 1st October of the following year after the application, or earlier if a German language course is taken prior to the study program.
This DAAD Scholarship is offered for a Master’s degree/postgraduate degree leading to a final qualification, or a complementary course that does not lead to a final qualification (not an undergraduate course) at a state or state-recognized German university of your choice. This program only funds projects in the area of Design/Projects. When selecting the desired degree programs, care must be taken that they provide a minimum number of CP (credit points according to the European Credit Transfer System/ECTS) for the area of Design/Projects.
The scholarship (Postgraduate Studies in the Field of Architecture) is awarded for the duration of the standard period of study for the chosen study program (up to a maximum of 24 months). In the case of 2-year courses, further funding is provided after the first year of study, if your academic achievements thus far indicate that you will successfully complete the study program within a reasonable period of time. Applicants who are already in Germany in the first year of a postgraduate course at the time of application may apply for funding for their second year of study. In this case, it is not possible to extend the scholarship.

- if necessary: German language course (2, 4 or 6 months) before the start of the study visit in Germany; the DAAD decides whether to fund participation and for how long depending on German language skills and project. Participation in a German language course is compulsory if the language of instruction or working language is German at the German host institution.
- Allowance for a personally chosen German language course during the scholarship period
- Reimbursement of the fees for the TestDaF test, which has either been taken in the home country after receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter or in Germany before the end of the funding period.
DAAD Scholarship to Study Architecture in Germany Eligibility
To qualify for this scholarship to study in Europe, Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be an applicant of foreign nationality.
- Have gained a first university degree in the areas of Architecture, Interior Design, Monument Conservation, Urban Planning/Urban Development, Landscape Architecture, and Landscape Planning at the latest by the time they commence their scholarship-supported study program.
- As a rule, your university degree should not date back more than 6 years at the time of the application deadline.
- Your application cannot be considered if you have been resident in Germany for longer than 15 months at the application deadline.
- If you are enrolled in a Master’s or postgraduate degree program which includes a study period abroad, funding for this period abroad is usually only possible under the following conditions: The study visit is essential for the achievement of the scholarship objective, the visit does not take place in the home country, and it is no longer than a quarter of the scholarship period. Longer periods cannot be funded, even partially.
Applicants in the field of architecture should have a knowledge of the language of instruction that corresponds to the requirements of the chosen university at the latest by the time they start their scholarship. If you do not yet have the language skills required by the university at the time of your scholarship application, your application should indicate the extent to which you are in a position to reach the required level. Please inquire at the universities that come into question for you whether the required language skills must already be proven with the application for admission to the desired degree program. How to Apply for the DAAD Scholarship to Study Architecture in Germany
Interested applicants who would like to apply for this government scholarship need to follow the given instructions below.
- Register in the DAAD portal (Read notes about registering in the portal).
- Request references (if necessary according to the call for proposals, see “Application procedure”). The form, which has to be completed by a referee, has to be generated in the DAAD portal in the section “Request reference” after registration and downloaded. Please send the form by e-mail to your referee and ask for the completed reference form to be returned to you in a sealed envelope. In each case, please provide your referee with the application address, thus enabling him/her to send the recommendation letter there direct. Please note that the form for completion by a referee can only be generated during the application period (from about 6 weeks before the application deadline).

- Download and complete the online application form
- Prepare application documents
- If necessary, translate documents (unless they are already in German or English).
- Scan paper documents (except references) and save in PDF format. Please note that you can only upload PDF files to the portal.
- Upload the completed application form and the required appendices (except reference and the work samples, which you have to submit) to the portal in PDF format. Translations, if applicable, should be uploaded together with the document issued in the original language.
- Submit the uploaded application documents online.
