Students from any discipline and higher-education institution are invited to apply for the Heinrich Böll Foundation scholarships for 2024-2025 in Germany. The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships for Undergraduates, Graduates, and Ph.D. degree programs to support both foreign and German students. Applications to undergraduate degree programs are only open to Germans and foreign students educated in Germany.
The Heinrich Böll Foundation scholarship department will grant around 1500 Scholarships to International Students, European Union and German students to undertake studies in Germany for courses starting in April or October.
Named after the German Nobel Prize winner in Literature, the Heinrich Böll Foundation aims at fostering democracy and upholding human rights, taking action to prevent the destruction of the global ecosystem, advancing equality between women and men, securing peace through conflict prevention in crisis zones, and defending the freedom of individuals against excessive state and economic power.

Heinrich Böll Foundation scholarships Benefits
The Heinrich Boll scholarship coverage varies depending on the level and status of the student as shown below:
- Scholarship amount
- Germans/Foreign students educated in Germany and EU nationals/Students not educated in Germany:
- PhD Students: €1350 per month plus €100 per month for research allowance;
- Undergraduate and graduate students: max. €812 plus €300 book allowance per month;
- A possible family and/or childcare allowance, health insurance, or similar.
- Non-EU nationals/Students not educated in Germany :
- PhD Students: €1,200 per month plus €100 mobility allowance per month, plus various individual allowances;
- Undergraduate and Graduate students: €934 per month plus various individual allowance;
- A possible family and/or childcare allowance, health insurance, or similar.
- Germans/Foreign students educated in Germany and EU nationals/Students not educated in Germany:
- Funding of research stay abroad:
- Germans/Foreign students educated in Germany and EU nationals/Students not educated in Germany: Additional funding available for scholarship-holders only;
- Non-EU nationals/Students not educated in Germany : Funding is available for limited periods spent abroad.
- Funding of tuition fees:
- Germans/Foreign students educated in Germany and EU nationals/Students not educated in Germany: Not possible in Germany. Possible to a limited extent in other countries for Undergraduate, Graduate, and Ph.D. students;
- Non-EU nationals/Students not educated in Germany :
- PhD Students: Not possible;
- Undergraduate and graduate students: In certain cases, possible in Germany.
Heinrich Böll Foundation scholarships Eligibility
To apply for this foundation scholarship, candidates must have the following profile:
- Proof of the required level of German language (B2 or DSH 2)
- excellent school grades and academic standing
- social engagement and interest in politics
- (self)-reflective, goal-oriented, creative personalities in their own right with inter-cultural and gender-democratic competencies
- identification with the goals of the Foundation
- responsible, motivated, reliable individuals willing to play an active role in the Foundation’s work
