Applications to undergraduate, Master, and Doctoral Degree Programs for Spring 2024 Admission at the National Tsing Hua University are currently being received. Enrolling international students may win the NTHU International Student Scholarship. This scholarship is offered by the Office of Global Affairs at NTHU to international students enrolling in undergraduate, and graduate degree programs at the university. Students from all countries in the world who wish to study at the National Tsing Hua University are welcome to apply.
The scholarship is awarded to admitted international students. Therefore, those who wish to be considered for this scholarship must first apply for admission to the university. Funded by the university, this scholarship program is open for international students to study at Undergraduate, master’s and PhD degree levels. This is a good opportunity for candidates who would like to study in Taiwan at one of the best universities in Asia.
Established in 1956, the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU – 國立清華大學) is a research university located in Hsinchu, Taiwan. NTHU offers a full range of degree programs in science, humanities, technology, engineering, social sciences, and management. The university was selected as one of the seven national research universities in Taiwan and is consistently ranked among the top three best universities in Taiwan in world university rankings. - For those admitted to International Intercollegiate Ph.D. Program without a supervisor yet: four months of stipend (NTD 10,000 per month) will be provided by the Office of Global Affairs along with tuition fee and credit fee waiver for the first semester.
- If those students could confirm/her supervisor before enrolling in NTHU or before the fourth month, the Division of Global Students Recruitment and Service will give those students a form to fill out. Then they will receive the monthly stipend from the Office of Global Affairs for the 5th-6th month.
- The student needs to secure her/his PhD supervisor before the end of the first semester. The scholarship type for the second semester will be determined by the supervisor/academic department. NTHU International Student Scholarship will be revoked if the student fails to secure a supervisor, and can only be reapplied at the end of the second semester.
Note : The student is responsible for payment of the remaining fees not covered by the scholarship (Such as student insurance, health insurance, housing, housing deposit, internet user fee, etc.). Scholarships are renewed every year, based on merit. The applicant should re-apply each year.
NTHU International Student Scholarship Eligibility
To apply for this Asia scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. All individuals of foreign nationality, who never had a R.O.C. citizenship and do not possess an overseas Chinese student status at the time of their application, are qualified to apply for admission to National Tsing Hua University as an international student.
2. The following two exceptions are made for individuals who have lived overseas continuously for more than six years. The six-year period shall be calculated from the starting date of the semester for which the applicant is applying (Feb.1st for the spring semester or Aug.1st for the fall semester). “Overseas” refers to countries or regions other than Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau; the term “continuously” means that an individual may stay in Taiwan for no more than a total of 120 days per calendar year.
- An individual who is also a national of the R.O.C. but does not currently hold and has never held household registration in Taiwan.
- An individual who, at the time of application, has had their R.O.C. citizenship annulled by the Ministry of the Interior for no less than 8 years.
Individuals applying under the terms of these two exceptions must have not studied in Taiwan under the status of an Overseas Chinese student, nor received placement permission through the University Entrance Committee for Overseas Chinese Students.
3. Applicants, concurrently holding a permanent residence status in Hong Kong, Macao, having no history of a household registration record in Taiwan, and, at the time of application, have resided in Hong Kong, Macao, or another foreign country for no less than 6 years, are also qualified to apply for admission as an international student.
Applicants with a :
- high school diploma are eligible to apply for the four-year undergraduate programs
- bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply for the master’s programs
- master’s degree are eligible to apply for the doctoral programs.
Note : Government scholarship recipients are not eligible for this scholarship at the same time. Students with working visas or ARC based on working permits are not eligible for this scholarship.

How to Apply for the NTHU International Student Scholarship
Those who are interested in this university scholarship should apply for admission to their programs. Furthermore, they must login to the online application system, and check the box “Apply for NTHU International Student Scholarship” in the scholarship application section under “Personal Information”. Applicants should follow the steps below to submit valid applications.
- Click on the apply button below;
- Create Your Account: Create a Login ID (email account) and PIN (Personal Identification Number) to set up an account. Once you have an ID and a PIN, please click “Send.” The system will create an account for you. You cannot begin applying without first setting up your account. A valid email is required to continue the process, as this will be our primary means of communication with you. If you do not have a valid email account, please create one before proceeding;
- Fill Out the Application Information;
- Fill Out Recommenders and Send the Notice: Fill out your recommenders and click “Send Notice” to proceed;
- Pay the Fee (to the university) and Upload Requirements: Pay the application fees and prepare the materials required for uploading. The applicant must upload all application requirements listed on the checklist;
- Confirm and Submit Your Application: The applicant must confirm and click “Submit” to complete the application;
- Track Your Application: After submitting, the applicant can track the application status using the NTHU International Student Online Application System.
Required Documents
- The online application form : The applicant must complete the application form through the NTHU’s online application system. Download the form to paste a photo and sign in your handwriting at the bottom of the form;
- A photocopy of diploma in English or Chinese :
- Applicants for bachelor’s degree programs must submit an official high school transcript.
- Applicants for master’s degree programs must submit an official bachelor’s degree transcript.
- Applicants for doctoral degree programs must submit an official transcript from both bachelor’s & master’s degrees.
- Official transcripts in English or Chinese:
- Applicants for bachelor’s degree programs must submit an official high school transcript.
- Applicants for master’s degree programs must submit an official bachelor’s degree transcript.
- Applicants for doctoral degree programs must submit an official transcript from both bachelor’s & master’s degrees.
- Two recommendation letters: Complete the information for two recommenders on the online application system. Preferably, recommenders are teachers who can evaluate your academic qualifications and research potential. Fill out your recommenders and click “Send Notice” to proceed. Please ensure that your recommenders complete your recommendations before the application deadline or you cannot submit your application;
- Financial certificate : All applicants are required to provide a financial statement issued by a financial institution showing their financial sustainability (NTD 120,000 or USD 4,000) for study in Taiwan, or a certificate of scholarship. If the submitted financial statement is not under the name of the applicant, then the applicant’s sponsor(s) must provide an affidavit indicating their relationship to the applicant and their intent to provide financial support throughout his/her period of study;
- Certification of Financial Responsibility Form : On the form, applicants must state the source of the money related to the Financial Statement. If the bank account is from their sponsor to satisfy this financial obligation, then their sponsor must provide a statement declaring their relationship with the applicant and their intent to provide financial support throughout their period of study. Select “personal funds” if the name of the bank statement is the same as the applicant’s. Select “sponsor” if the name of the bank statement is different than the applicant. Fill in the sponsor’s information and provide a signature.
- Declaration Form : Print the declaration form (generated by the online application system) and after reviewing the form, please print and sign at the bottom of the form;
- Verification of Nationality : Provide verification of your nationality or a copy of your passport. Please also provide Alien Resident Certificate (if any);
- Pretest : Applicants for Bachelor programs must download the Pretest Instructions from NTHU International Student Online Application System and submit the pretests (if any).
- Program-specific requirements: Applicants must read through the admission instructions for any additional application instructions and/or required documents of the department or program that they are applying. If applicable, these should be submitted at the same time as their general application;
- Additional supporting documents : Applicants may submit any supporting documents
- Application fee Payment Receipt: ensure to upload the application fee payment receipt (either transaction receipt or payment record screenshot) onto the online application system after you have made the payment. Please specify your application number on the receipt. If you are applying for more than one program, please include all application numbers on the receipt. See example one and two.
Important Notice:
- NTHU only accepts diplomas written in English or Chinese. Thus, if your diploma were written in other languages, it should be accompanied by a notarized English or Chinese translation
- Applicants who are in the process of completing their studies at the time of application can submit a letter from their current school/university clearly stating their anticipated graduation date;
- Applicants who will be pursuing a second degree in a different field of study must also submit a photocopy of the first degree/diploma.
- Applicants, who received a bachelor’s degree or above from schools in Mainland China, are required to additionally provide a certificate of degree conferral.
